Baptism
INFANT BAPTISM
Congratulations! We rejoice with you for the gift of your child. It has been the constant practice of the Roman Catholic Church from the earliest times to administer the sacrament of Baptism to infants. Truly, the Baptism of a child is more than simply the pouring of water and removing original sin. It is a sharing in the life of Christ, and celebrating becoming a member of God's family, the Church. Baptism is not a one-time event, but the beginning of a life-long journey of faith. Since a Baptism is a communal event, the sacrament of Baptism at St. Brigid is generally celebrated during one of the regular weekend Masses, although, if needed, arrangements can be made with the celebrant for an alternate time.
Parents are required to attend a Baptism preparation session for their first child, and they are welcome to attend for others, if they so desire. This preparation program gives parents the opportunity to consider the meaning of their own faith, to ask questions, discuss how to share and pass on their faith to their child(ren), affirm the Church’s understanding of Baptism, and come to understand the elements of the Rite of Baptism itself. These Sacrament of Baptism preparation sessions are held in the Parish Office, and scheduled with the celebrant involved. Indeed, as you think about the baptism of your child, you might want to prayerfully begin to consider the following questions:
- What does faith mean to me/my spouse?
- How do I/we live my/our faith?
- What is the faith I/we want our child to have?
CHOOSING GODPARENTS
Parents who present their child for baptism should also give prayerful thought about whom they wish to be the Godparent(s) of their child. Godparents should be committed Christians who are living their belief in Jesus. Indeed, in accepting the responsibility of being a Godparent, the person is saying he/she wishes to support the growth of the child to full Christian adulthood in faith, and the parents in their role as Christian parents.
Godparents, one male one female, must be at least 16 years old, and at least one of the Godparents must be a Catholic who has received the Sacrament of Confirmation, and regularly worships and participates in the church. One of the Godparents may be a member of another Christian faith.
