3rd through 5th Grade Physical Education

What days do we have PE?  3rd, 4th and 5th grade have PE on Tuesday and Thursday in the morning.

What kind of shoes do we need?  Shoes need to be athletic type shoes that either tie with laces or can be tightened with Velcro straps.  The type of shoe that just has elastic criss-crossed up the shoe with no method of tightening the shoe around the ankle are not permitted.  Skateboard shoes that have very loose shoestrings that are tucked behind the tongue of the shoe are also not permitted unless the shoe is tied tightly like a regular gym shoe.

Overview of the year

The intermediate grade levels generally do not need the emphasis on movement education that is essential in the primary grades, but should continue to work on motor skills, especially those with manipulatives. The work of the intermediate level physical education program focuses on developmental skills, readying the students for full participation in recreational activities, sports and games. Approximately two thirds of the intermediate program is concerned with developing the movement/motor skills that will later be applied to sports and games. Rhythmic activities are included. Fitness activities and cooperative activities account for the remainder of the program time. Students experience a variety of lead-up activities and modified games, rather than the full-fledged sport or game, since their skills are yet developing. Unsatisfying experiences with sports at this level --requiring more skill than the student has, or spending a significant part of the class time less physically involved (waiting turns, etc.) can readily result in creating a distaste for physical education classes and for physical activity in general.

In 3rd through 5th grade, there is some repetition from 2nd grade with more emphasis on motor skills.  New skills are introduced in 3rd grade and they should be mastered by 5th grade.  Some examples of 3rd through 5th grade objectives are:
  • Control body balance in variety of positions, in motion & moving
  • Increase flexibility and range of motion
  • Perform balances, stunts, gymnastic movements
  • Demonstrate ability to solve movement problems
  • Perform basic locomotor movements in response to beat
  • Participate in rhythmic activities and basic dance movements
  • Throw at or to moving targets
  • Develop throwing and catching skills with increasing accuracy, distance, and speed
  • Develop increasingly sophisticated rope-jumping skills (varying speed, steps, involving others, etc.)
  • Develop striking skills using various implements (hand, paddle, bat)
  • Develop volleying skills
  • Increase ability to control direction and speed of ball with feet
  • Develop ability to move a ball while bouncing it (dribbling)
  • Understand that appropriate practice improves performance
  • Respect safety rules related to class procedure and activities
  • Recognize necessity of warm-up and cool down periods before and after strenuous exercise
  • Recognize increase in heart rate during and after strenuous activity
  • Monitor heart rate before and after strenuous activity
  • Develop physical agility, flexibility and coordination
  • Begin to assess own fitness level
  • Show regard for the safety of all participants in an activity
  • Recognize, accept and appreciate individual differences in performances
  • Demonstrate emotional control and concern for others in a variety of activities and games (on-going)
  • Accept constructive criticism from peers and teacher
  • Know basic rules involved in games and sports
